Olle Garden Bed vs. Wooden Garden Bed

National horticultural publications have raised concerns about the safety of using treated wood as garden beds in food gardens. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency phased out residential use of wood treated with arsenic-containing compounds in 2003, and these treatments have been modified to use copper-containing compounds. After reviewing the available information, we highly recommend another material: galvanized metal. Galvanized raised metal garden beds will have initial costs and labor, but the finished product will last for many years and provide a safe, growing space for your plants.

FAQs

Q: Will the garden beds get too hot during the summer or in hot climates?

A: No, they won't for the following reasons:
1. The superior reflectivity of the material keeps most of the heat from ever passing through into the soil.

2. The bulk of the soil within the bed quickly absorbs and dissipates heat from the thin, but strong stainless steel edges.
Compared to the standard wooden, concrete, or plastic garden beds - especially if it is made from a darker color or material - Olle garden beds outperform in maintaining even and cool soil temperature.

Q: Where are the drainage holes in the garden bed?

A: The garden beds are bottomless which allows water to escape and removes the need to drill any drainage holes. By connecting the soil below the garden bed to the soil you add on top, you can build stronger soil resulting in a healthier garden.

Q. What does "12-in-1" modular design mean?

A: Olle’s unique 12-in-1 modular design means that same set of parts allows you to assemble them into 12 different shapes to fit your yard for a personalized effect, making your garden transformation as easy as putting together Lego blocks.

Q. Is Olle made of aluminium? Is it toxic?

A: Olle metal garden beds are not made of aluminum, as aluminum contains toxins that can contaminate soil and vegetables.

Each Olle metal garden bed is made of 0.6mm galvanized steel as the main material, with Aluzinc color coating on the surface for anti-corrosion as well as acid and alkali resistance. All materials have been tested by SGS. They are 100% safe and non-toxic so you can use it with confidence.

Q: Can we place stones at the bottom of the garden bed to increase drainage space?

A: Yes, you can, especially with the 32" tall Olle garden bed or in a garden bed located in a yard with poor drainage. Placing gravel at the bottom of the raised bed will help improve drainage and air circulation. As the soil settles and becomes compacted over time, the rock at the bottom of the bed provides space for excess water to drain away from the roots of the plants.

The Advantages of Hugelkultur

Hugelkultur is the process of layering organic garden waste inside the raised garden bed before adding soil to save on costs as well as to attract and preserve moisture. It is especially applicable in areas where soil retention and drainage are poor, which is typical of soils found in urban areas. The materials used include large rotting logs, sticks, and other debris that are layered with grass clippings, coffee grounds, composts, and other organic matter. As the material breaks down, it creates a flourishing environment for beneficial fungi and microbes that mimic the natural landscape of a forest.

  • Cost Efficient

  • Environmentally Friendly

  • Water Retention

  • Soil Temperature

  • Soil Improvement

  • Minimal Maintenance

Buying bags of soil from a store is quite costly, which can amount to over a hundred dollars for large garden beds. The Hugelkultur method turns garden and kitchen waste into useful material for filling raised garden beds, allowing you to save a substantial amount of money. You can also repurpose fallen tree branches or dead branches cut from trees instead of carting them away or burning them. The organic waste will decompose over the years, enriching the soil and providing steady nutrition for plants to use.

When branches are burned, gasses and nutrients are released into the atmosphere, which contributes to global warming. By retaining them in the ground, they undergo carbon sequestration, a process that reverses CO2 pollution and mitigates climate change.

Hugelkultur tends to hold water very well since the garden waste works as a sponge to hold moisture, releasing rainwater into the soil during dry seasons. This allows gardeners to save on water costs by reducing the frequency of watering. In addition, you don’t have to worry about overwatering your plants to the point they become waterlogged, which is detrimental to root growth and can choke out oxygen.

While compost is decomposed by bacteria, hugel beds are primarily decomposed by fungi. As the organic matters decompose, they will heat up and create a microclimate under the plants, and warm the raised garden bed soil, which can be very helpful in colder climates.

Hugelkultur also creates a mini biosphere consisting of microorganisms, fungi, and insects, emulating the natural landscape of a forest, with its spongy, nutrient-rich soil teeming with microorganisms. Because the soil is naturally aerated, it employs a gardening technique known as no-till gardening. Plants grown in this manner are more resilient to disease, pests, and environmental stressors. They are also more flavorful due to the abundant nutrients.

Although the initial setup takes some effort and preparation, there is not a lot of maintenance involved in these garden beds once they have been constructed. They also require minimal weeding compared to conventional beds.
